Replacing Your Desktop RAM (Anyone Can Do It)

Published by malefactor at 1:45 am under Do IT Yourself Computer Repair Edit This

Replacing the RAM, sometimes referred to as memory, in your desktop computer is quite simple. First, always turn off your computer and disconnect the power cord from the computer before working on anything inside the computer. Now, just open up your case. Place the computer so that all the connections on the back of the computer are on the side of the case that is closest to the ground, now just open up the side of the case facing up. At this point, you must locate the RAM in your computer. I’ve provided a picture of desktop RAM below. On either end of your desktop RAM there will be a white clip. Push down on these clips and they should fold out and down. This will release your RAM. Now simply pick up the stick of RAM, preferably from the edges where the clips held them, and then place them to the side in a safe place. Repeat this process for each stick of RAM you wish to replace. If you are just adding more RAM to your desktop computer then you of course do not have to worry about removing any RAM, you just need to install your new stick.

Now that you have removed the old RAM, you will have an empty RAM slot on your motherboard for each stick you removed. The most difficult part of installing your new RAM stick is making sure that the keyed holes on the bottom of the stick line up with the keyed holes in the slot. Just line the hole up on the bottom of your stick of RAM with the raised piece in the middle of the RAM slot. Once you have aligned the RAM correctly, simply apply even pressure across the top of the stick. Do not be afraid to apply enough pressure to securely push the stick into the slot. You will know when the RAM has been seated properly by observing the clips you pushed down to release the RAM. Once the RAM is pushed all the way down into the slot, these clips will raise back to the position they started at, holding the RAM securely on either side.

Congratulations, you have replaced your own desktop RAM! See, it wasn’t that hard, now was it? Now just shut your case and plug your power cord in. Enjoy your new RAM.
